When was the last time you truly paused to admire the wonder of nature? Sure, lights and sounds show in the city can be mesmerizing, but have you ever experienced a natural light and sound show? I hadn’t—until I stumbled upon the firefly festival (Kajwa Mahotsav) in Maharashtra, a magical phenomenon that turns ordinary trees into shimmering display of light.

For many of us, fireflies bring back sweet childhood memories. I can still picture those warm summer nights spent running around, captivated by the fleeting sparks of light dancing in the dark. But at the firefly festival, it’s a whole unique experience. Millions of fireflies illuminate the forest in waves of twinkling lights. Imagine trees glowing as if they are wrapped in fairy lights, nature’s own way of celebrating a Diwali. How could I resist?
This May, my partner and I decided to experience this natural marvel during a road trip to Bhandardara, a serene getaway just 161 km from Mumbai. Known for its lush green beauty during the monsoon. However, Bhandardara transforms into a completely different canvas in summer. While the greenery was less but the spectacle of fireflies was extraordinary.
The Journey Begins

For any road trip, I love being prepared. I packed all the essentials—packed breakfast and lunch, few snacks, fruits, and a good playlist for the road. The drive to Bhandardara took around four hours, and as we left the bustling metro city behind, the landscape gradually transitioned into the peaceful countryside.
We had booked a tent with a popular organizer for firefly tours. The package included a campsite near the Lake Arthur at Bhandardhara and a guided jungle walk to witness the fireflies. They also offer other complimentary activities like Kayaking, Rafting, Archery etc. Although they offered pick-and-drop facilities, we chose the freedom of traveling in our own car. We reached Bhandardara in the late afternoon. The campsite, nestled close to the dam, was cozy and inviting, with sleeping tents pitched neatly and a bonfire waiting to be lit.
Camping Under the Stars

As the sun set, the weather turned colder, and the campsite came alive. A bonfire was lit, and the aroma of Masala chai and pakoras (fried fitters) filled the air. There’s something about sitting around a fire under a clear, starlit sky that makes time stand still. This is the kind of moment where bonds are formed and cherished—perfect for families, especially for the kids.
We played games, danced to music, and chatted with fellow travellers. The atmosphere was so relaxed and fun, we almost forgot we were waiting for something even more magical. When the dinner was served, our excitement was palpable—everyone was waiting for the night’s highlight: the firefly walks.
Into the Enchanted Forest
At around 9 PM, it was time. Armed with nothing but our curiosity, we followed the guide into the dark forest. After about ten minutes, we stopped near a large Behda tree and sat in silence, waiting. No torches, no flashlights—just the faint moonlight and our whispered conversations.
Fireflies particularly reside on certain trees like Terminalia Chebula (Hirda) and Belleric Myrobalan (Behda). The guide explained during the mating season how male fireflies synchronize their blinking patterns to attract females, creating ripples and even geometric patterns on the trees.
At first, just a few tiny sparks flickered in the dark, like shy stars peeking through clouds. But soon, the entire tree came alive, glowing with thousands of tiny lights. The patterns were mesmerizing—waves of synchronized blinks, spirals, and ripples that seemed almost mathematical in their precision. It felt like the fireflies were performing a symphony, each light pulses a note in their ethereal melody. We sat there, spellbound, not daring to blink, so that we won’t miss a moment of this breathtaking show.
When can you experience firefly festivals?
The best time to catch these magical creatures is during May and June, just before the rains. However, the time may fluctuate based on the arrival of monsoon.
Where you see fireflies in Maharashtra

A Gentle Reminder
While the firefly festival is a marvel, it’s also a fragile one. The growing popularity of this event has started to affect the fireflies’ habitats. It is essential to tread lightly, avoid using lights, stay quiet, and respect the environment. These glowing insects depend on darkness and silence to communicate. This mating rituals is essential for their lifecycles and existence.
Why should you go?

Experiencing the fireflies at Bhandardara was unforgettable. It reminded me of the beauty that exists in the simplest of things—a tiny insect lighting up the world, creating magic without expecting anything in return.
